Outdoor structures built for regular use, with sound framing, practical access and details that belong with the house and property.

Decks and porches are exposed to weather, frequent foot traffic and changing seasonal conditions. Long-term performance begins with the structure: suitable footings, proper ledger or freestanding design, reliable connections, drainage and framing sized for the intended span and load.

PDS Carpentry builds decks, covered porches, stairs, railings and timber features for homes and rural properties. The design can be straightforward and durable or include roof structures, exposed wood and custom details that create a stronger connection between the house and yard.

Start with how the space will be used

A useful deck needs comfortable circulation, sensible stair locations and enough clear area for the way the family actually uses the property. Door locations, grade changes, furniture, barbecues, hot tubs and covered areas all influence the framing and footing plan.

Paul works through those requirements before material is ordered. On additions and larger renovations, the deck or porch can be coordinated with the main structure so rooflines, posts and future exterior finishes are considered together.

Covered porches and exposed timber

A covered porch adds roof loads and structural connections that a simple platform deck does not have. Beams, posts, uplift resistance and the connection to the house must follow the approved design. PDS has experience framing porch roofs and integrating them with garages, additions, barns and homes.

Exposed timber entrances and accents can give a project character without making the entire structure timber framed. Species, finish, connection details and weather exposure are discussed so the selected approach suits both the appearance and maintenance expectations.

A complete, buildable scope

A quote identifies the structure, decking, stairs, railings, roof framing and finish items included. Permit drawings, engineering and footing systems can be coordinated where required, while electrical, roofing or specialty railing work can be separated clearly if another trade is responsible.

For an initial review, send the property location, approximate dimensions, height above grade, photos of the house and a description of any roof, stair or railing preferences. This makes the first estimate more relevant to the actual property.

Common questions

Planning your decks & timber work project.

Do you build covered porches?

Yes. PDS frames covered porches and can coordinate the drawings, footings and structural details required for the roof and its connection to the building.

Can you add timber details without building a full timber-frame structure?

Yes. Exposed timber entrances, posts, beams and accents can be incorporated where they suit the design.

Do decks require permits?

Requirements depend on the municipality, height, size, location and attached features. The local building department confirms what applies to the property.

What should I send for a quote?

Send dimensions, height above grade, property photos, the preferred stair location and details about any roof, railing or timber features.
